Cisco has tested and validated its collaboration, borderless networking and data center technologies, and leveraged on an ecosystem of virtualization vendors, to offer the Cisco Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI).
The VXI system aims to simplify virtual desktop deployments and enhance them for rich media and video. In other words, organizations can now reap the workforce flexibility benefits offered by desktop virtualization and enable the mobile workforce to be equally productive in-office or out of the office.
Finance-wise, desktop virtualization can reduce per-user PC support costs by 51 percent, an item that accounts for 67 percent of PC-related IT expenses. That can be achieved at a lower total cost of ownership because VXI allows significantly more virtual desktops to be hosted on each server.
Among the Cisco technologies that have been validated within VXI include the Cisco Unified Communications applications and end points such as the Cisco Cius tablet. Also validated are the Cisco Quad platform; Cisco ACE load balancing and application delivery; Cisco wide area application acceleration software; the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances; the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client; the Cisco Unified Computing System; Cisco Nexus and Cisco Catalyst data center switches; Cisco MDS multilayer SAN switches; and Cisco Integrated Services Routers.
The Cisco Cius business tablet can be used in virtualized desktop environments via client applications from Citrix, VMware and Wyse. The VXI system also supports other endpoint devices including Cisco Unified IP Phones, laptops, smart phones and other business tablets. The system uses Citrix’s XenDesktop 5 and VMware’s View 4.5 desktop virtualization software, and supports management and security applications; EMC and NetApp storage systems; and many Microsoft applications.
“The only way to reverse the increasing complexity, inflexibility and cost of IT environments is through pervasive virtualization and cloud computing. Cisco’s VXI approach embraces this transformation,” says Mike O’Neill, EMC’s vice president of Technology Alliances. “EMC is delivering a pre-tested and validated design unified storage solution based on Cisco UCS and VMware View for Cisco VXI system. Technologies like our FAST and FAST Cache enable customers to utilize solid state drives for performance, scalability and cost effectiveness that are unmatched in the industry.”
