Symantec's 'State of Spam & Phishing Report' for April 2010

Symantec's latest State of Spam & Phishing Report shows a correlation between historic economic events and the attention grabbing subject lines utilised by spammers.  Some of the language employed over the last month suggests a hopeful economic outlook on the part of spammers, with subject lines dominated by offers of new jobs and self improvement.

Symantec advises Internet users to follow these best practices to avoid phishing attacks and similar online scams:

  1. Do not click on suspicious links in email messages.

  2. Check the URL of the website and make sure that it belongs to the brand.

  3. Type the domain name of your brand’s website directly into your browser’s address bar rather than following any link.

  4. Frequently update your security software, such as Norton Internet Security 2010, which protects you from online phishing.
